Notebook PCs outsell desktops

The third quarter of 2008 marked a first for the computer industry. According to iSuppli, more laptops were sold worldwide than desktop PCs – only for the quarter, however. Compared to the third quarter of 2007, notebook PC sales spiked 40% to 38.6 million computers sold. The desktop PC market will not fare quite as well.
“Momentum was in the notebook market for some time, it is not surprising that a complete shipments have surpassed that of desktop PCs,” says Matthew Wilkins, principal analyst for the calculation of platforms at iSuppli. “However, this is an important event in the PC market, because the beginning of the era of the notebook.”
